Reviews, Photos & User Content

Area Tech Lead

I'm currently an area tech lead on Google Maps, where I've been working for 15 years. My teams and I work on reviews, photos, and user-generated content on Maps.

If you've written a review or submitted a photo, you've used our tech. If you use price ranges ("$10–$20") or star ratings (⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐), that's us too.

These features help millions of people around the world. I help set the bar for them — how they're built, and what the tradeoffs are.

Experimentation

Top expert in Google Maps

Early in my career I worked on the basic measurement infrastructure of Google Maps, and later became the go-to expert on Maps experiments for hundreds of teams. For years I advised lead PMs and core teams on how to build, run, and understand them.

Software Architecture

Org-wide design driver

I led efforts for our 100-person org to coordinate our engineering design, playing the connector role across teams. I created and led design forums, using my broad knowledge and visibility to help everyone work together more.

Large-scale projects

Aligning 100+ teams

I ran projects that needed support from tens to hundreds of teams, bridging the gaps with clear technical communication and by anticipating what each group would need.

Bachelor of Science (Maths, Computing) with Honors in Machine Learning

The Discovery and Use of Ordinal Information on Attribute Values in Classifier Learning

Published paper, 2011

My honors research was the capstone of this degree, and it grew into a peer-reviewed paper published in 2011.

The work shows how to discover and use ordinal structure in attribute values — the natural ordering among them — to help classifiers learn better.
